We've just finished the second week of school. I'm so happy to realize that, thus far, everyone is not just surviving, but seems to be thriving. There aren't full homework loads yet but so far so good.
This school year is looking very different for our family. It's the first time in about 8 years that I'm not homeschooling anyone. Last year I only had my youngest (then a 4th grader) at home, but this year both he and I are "going" to school. My oldest started high school, my middle started junior high, my baby started *at* a school, and I'm on campus this semester as I've exhausted all classes I could take online. (anyone else on the super-slow track to a college degree?)
As we've got a lot of adjusting to do this month, I'm keeping it simple with my goals for September.
Here's a recap of my August goals:
1. Have my kids make a summer bucket list. We wrapped up the summer with some swimming, cousin sleepovers, and cheering for our favorite minor-league baseball team.
2. Read one fiction and one non-fiction book. Parenting the QBQ Way was short and easy. I'll be reviewing it soon. The Secret Keeper is a long one! I'll finish it up this weekend.
3. Make plans for our wedding anniversary. Check.
4. Finish my independent study class. Hooray! With pretty much nonstop work, I finished!
5. Help the kids check in on the goals they set in January. I still need to do this. :/
6. Research more affordable ways to watch NFL games. No great solution yet. Will probably suck up the fees because the season is here!
7. Go to a Drive-In Movie. Sadly, no. Crossing fingers for a nice weekend so we can still do this.
8. Start a "mom journal" for each kid. Journal's are picked out. Haven't written yet. Baby steps...
(please ignore the dirt road. our street has been "under construction" for the last 3 months.)
september goals:
1. MAKE A FOUR-WEEK MENU PLAN
I've done this before as far as a general outline is concerned and it was so helpful. This time I'm going to try a new method and plan the recipes, too, (instead of just saying: beef, chicken, soup, etc) and see how it works out. If it's a success, you can be sure I'll share it with you.
2. GO HIKING
This is one of my favorite activities. It might be the single most restorative thing I do for myself. I haven't gone as much this year as I'd like, but we still have some good weather left, so I'm going to try and go about once a week. I also want to do a family hike or two.
3. CLEAN OUT AND ORGANIZE THE KIDS' BEDROOMS
We have been undergoing some physical changes to our house. They're about done and it's time for some major cleaning out in the bedrooms. After we get rid of all the outgrown/irrelevant/extra stuff it will be a great time to move things around a little bit and make the rooms fit the kids' current personalities and needs a little better. I'm excited for this.
4. FAMILY READ ALOUD: THE GIVER, BY LOIS LOWRY
It's important to me to provide our family with shared experiences for bonding and common reference points, including the literary kind. As the kids have gotten older (more independent. busier.) I've kind of stopped reading to them. My youngest still likes me to, but the girls aren't so interested. This month I'm going to read aloud The Giver to everyone. I've heard mixed reviews about the movie, but it's a good motivator for them to know we'll watch it as soon as we finish the book.
Thanks for reading! What are you planning for September?
